The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a large consignment of Canadian Loud, a form of high-strength marijuana, weighing 4,173.5 kilograms at Tincan Island Harbor in Lagos.
The consignment has a street value of N10.4 billion.
NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said the success of prohibiting illegal drug smuggling was the result of serious intelligence gathering.
This is said to include ongoing monitoring, and tracking of the container, which has been moved several times since leaving Toronto, Canada, on March 28.
Babafemi said: ” The consignment was transported by rail to Montreal, where it was loaded aboard the Jakarta express shipping vessel, which arrived at Tanger Med Port in Morocco on April 15.
” It was unloaded and reloaded on another ship, the Osaka shipping, which finally arrived at Lagos Harbor on Saturday.
“It took more than two months for the monitoring of the shipment by the NDLEA’s Maritime Intelligence Unit and the agency’s Tincan Island Strategic Command.
“Operators work closely with international partners in particular the UK Home Office International Operations, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
“These efforts culminated in the seizure of the consignment on Tuesday, May 12 during a joint inspection of the containers by NDLEA officers, Customs officers and other security agencies.
“This development comes just four days after NDLEA agents raided a mansion in Lekki used as a stash house where 4,000 packets of the same psychoactive substance weighing 2,326 kilograms worth over N5.8 billion were discovered.”
