Former president of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), chief fan Ndubuoke, has said the country’s football authorities are deliberately working against the success of Emmanuel Amunike, warning that vested interests could deny the former international a fair chance to thrive as a coach in the country.

Ndubuoke made the remarks during a one-day conference organized by the SWAN Imo State chapter, where he said Amunike’s potential success could threaten those who currently control football administration in Nigeria, particularly with regards to the position of coach of the Super Eagles.

“If Emmanuel Amunike becomes coach and does well at any club, it will threaten the position of those in the football authorities in the country because Nigerians will start asking questions as to why he was not hired by the federation to manage the Super Eagles,” he said.

The former SWAN president also criticized the management of the national sports sector, describing it as lacking transparency and accountability. He likened the system to a “Ponzi scheme,” arguing that funds are routinely spent without adequate oversight.

He also urged the National Sports Commission (NSC), stressing that the commission functions without a board of directors, as required by the founding law. According to him, this raises concerns about the legality of financial transactions carried out under the current structure.

Ndubuoke urged sports journalists to remain steadfast in their duty as guardians of society, stressing the need for ethical reporting and accountability within the sports sector.

The conference, themed “Balancing truth and fairness: ethical responsibility in sports journalism”, attracted participants from across the sports media landscape and was widely seen as an eye-opener on the way sport is run in the country.
