NEMA and IOM welcome 170 Nigerians repatriated from Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency and the International Organization for Migration on Monday received 170 stranded Nigerians repatriated from Libya under the Assisted Voluntary Return Programme.

The returnees arrived at the cargo terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, at around 3.36pm on board an Air Buraq Airlines flight from Tripoli.

Speaking to journalists, the Head of NEMA Lagos Operations Office, Mohammed Olatunde, said the exercise was conducted in collaboration with the National Commission for Migrant Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons.

He explained that the initiative, supported by the Federal Government and IOM, aims to ensure the safe, dignified and humane return of Nigerians stranded abroad.

The analysis of the returnees showed that 163 were adults, of which 129 males and 34 females, while there were also seven children and two newborns on board.

Olatunde added that one of the returnees, an adult male, was treated for a health issue upon arrival.

He said officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service carried out biometric registration and documentation of returnees as part of standard procedures.

According to him, the displaced people were provided with food, drinking water, medical care and psychosocial support, while ambulance services and other logistics were used to facilitate their reception and reintegration into society.

The Assisted Voluntary Return Programme, facilitated by IOM, is part of ongoing efforts to evacuate Nigerians stranded in crisis-hit countries, including Libya.
