Nicosia (Core Reporters) Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with Cyprus have received a new boost following the formal presentation of letters of credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Ambassador Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to the Cypriot President, Nikos Christodoulides.
The ceremony, held on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, marked the official start of Ambassador Ufochukwu’s diplomatic assignment to the Mediterranean island nation.
During the ceremony, the Nigerian envoy conveyed fraternal greetings from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to President Christodoulides and expressed his commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Cyprus during his tenure.
The presentation of the Letters of Credence formally accredits Ambassador Ufochukwu to represent Nigeria in Cyprus and serve as the official channel of communication between the governments of both countries.
In his remarks, President Christodoulides welcomed the Nigerian Ambassador and reaffirmed the enduring friendship between Cyprus and Nigeria, underlining that their relationship was built on shared historical experiences, common principles and long-standing people-to-people bonds.
He recognized Nigeria’s significant role in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contribution to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.
The Cypriot President also expressed his government’s willingness to work closely with Nigeria to strengthen bilateral relations and promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
According to him, priority areas include trade, investment, economic cooperation, education and political dialogue, along with efforts to address common challenges through bilateral and multilateral engagements.
The remarks signal Cyprus’ willingness to deepen its diplomatic and economic engagement with Nigeria as both countries explore opportunities to expand cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic relations.
For Nigeria, Ambassador Ufochukwu’s accreditation represents an opportunity to strengthen the country’s diplomatic presence in the Mediterranean region, with a focus on economic partnerships, educational exchanges and the well-being of Nigerians living in Cyprus.
Closer engagement between the two countries could also create opportunities for Nigerian businesses, students and professionals, while providing a platform for greater Cypriot investment in Nigeria.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials of the Cypriot government and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
Ambassador Ufochukwu is expected to initiate meetings with Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community in an effort to translate the goodwill expressed at the ceremony into practical benefits for both countries.
His presentation of Letters of Credence marks a new phase in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, with both countries expressing willingness to consolidate their long-standing friendship and pursue shared economic, educational and diplomatic interests.
