![HURIWA [Press Release] The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued a strong condemnation of the Nigerian military for what it described as the most troubling era for human rights, accusing the military high command of attempting to justify the unlawful killing of a civilian and progressively eroding public confidence in civil-military accountability.](/pagespeed_static/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif)
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has condemned the killing of 3 officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kebbi State, calling it a “cowardly attack” and an “affront to the authority of the Nigerian state”.
The officers – Deputy Chief Assistant Road Marshal Umar Aliyu, Senior Assistant Road Marshal Ezra Manu Gona and Assistant Road Marshal I Mansur Ibrahim Nasir – were killed by suspected terrorists and bandits along Tsamiya-Illo road in Bagudo LGA while on official duty.
In a statement signed on 7 June 2026 by National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, HURIWA described the attack as “yet another tragic reminder of the worsening security crisis facing Nigeria”.
“These patriotic officers were serving their homeland when they were hunted down and killed mercilessly by armed criminals,” the group said. He expressed his condolences to the families of the slain officers, the leaders of the FRSC and the people of Kebbi State.
*“Intensify coordinated operations”*
HURIWA urged the army, police and intelligence agencies to intensify joint operations to “identify, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of this heinous crime”.
“Nigerians can no longer continue to live under the constant threat of terrorist attacks, kidnappings and violent crime,” he added.
*Praises the rescue and calls for action for the Oyo abductees*
The rights group also praised security agencies for rescuing the younger sister of a former energy minister and her twin children from kidnappers, saying the operation demonstrated that “coordinated, intelligence-driven strategies” work.
But attention quickly turned to the victims still in captivity, with particular attention to the abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
“While celebrating this success, HURIWA reminds security institutions that several innocent citizens remain captive. Of particular concern is the abduction of schoolchildren and their teachers in Oyo State,” the statement read.
HURIWA insisted that “every available security resource must be deployed to ensure their immediate and safe release”, warning that prolonged captivity exposes victims to severe physical, psychological and emotional trauma.
*Call to Tinubu administration*
The group called on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all security institutions to show “unwavering commitment to defeating terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other violent non-state actors.”
“Nigeria must not cede any part of its territory or any segment of its population to criminal elements. The time for decisive, intelligence-led and sustained action is now,” Onwubiko said.
