Former Governor of Anambra State and 2027 National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to publicly answer questions surrounding his past, arguing that public leadership demands transparency, courage and accountability.

The former Labor Party presidential candidate expressed concern over what he described as efforts to prevent public scrutiny of records relating to the President’s past, and stressed that Nigerians deserve answers to issues of legitimate public interest.
“It is shameful that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to suppress records regarding his past, especially records relating to legitimate public interests,” Obi said.
According to him, occupying the office of President carries an obligation to face difficult questions, not avoid them.
Obi argues that leadership is not about demonstrating perfection but demonstrating the courage and humility to admit mistakes, provide explanations when necessary, and seek forgiveness when mistakes occur.
He states that a leader’s moral authority can be strengthened when the leader accepts responsibility rather than attempting to shield controversial aspects of his or her past from public scrutiny.

The former governor specifically voiced his concerns regarding unresolved questions related to educational qualifications, arguing that issues involving a leader’s basic education, including primary and secondary school records, must be addressed clearly and credibly.
“Nigerians deserve clear, credible and verifiable explanations, especially when they have been delivered in the past,” he said.
Obi said the issue was more than just political rivalry, and warned that the standards set by those who occupy the presidency could have far-reaching consequences for the country.
He noted that Nigeria’s youth population, including millions of children currently attending school, look to national leaders as examples of the values society should uphold.
According to him, the Presidency must represent the highest standards of integrity, accountability, transparency and ethical behavior.
While admitting that no individual has a perfect past, Obi said the true test of leadership is the willingness to face one’s history honestly, make changes where necessary and put the interests of the nation above personal ambitions.
He questioned when members of Nigeria’s political class would fully appreciate the difference between temporary political ambitions and the country’s enduring interests.
“The presidency is an office held for one season; the moral standards set by those who occupy it can influence generations,” Obi said.
He further stated, “Nigeria is bigger than anyone, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before individual interests.”
Obi, who reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria and expressed optimism about the country’s future, ended his message with a familiar political phrase: “A New Nigeria Is Possible.”
