On Eid al-Fitr, Tinubu called for tolerance and unity among Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called on Nigerians to use the Eid celebrations to deepen the values of tolerance, generosity and peaceful coexistence.

He spoke after offering congregational prayers at the Dodan Barracks in Lagos on Wednesday, urging citizens to shun ethnic divisions and all forms of hatred that undermine national unity.

Joining the prayer were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu, and other dignitaries.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy) Tinubu said, the sacred event remains a profound reminder of obedience, sacrifice, love of humanity and total submission to the will of Allah Almighty, as demonstrated by Prophet Abraham.

“We thank Allah SWT for making us another year of Eid. We thank Him for His mercy, and we must learn from the lessons of this season, which is to show love to each other. No discrimination, no ethnicity, no hatred; we must share love and be generous with each other in a way that reflects the values of our country and humanity.

“It is important for us to be very tolerant and obedient to the will of Allah and the supremacy of law, which must be the guide for our society,” said the President.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and common humanity, and stressed that no ethnic, religious or political differences outweigh collective aspirations for peace, progress and national development.

The President called on the public to reflect on the lessons learned from this season by showing kindness to one another, supporting those less fortunate, and valuing the sanctity of human life more, and emphasized that banditry has no place in scripture.

“There is nothing in the sacred teachings that says that we should commit banditry or take human life. The sacrifices we talk about, even from the beginning of life, where we take these lessons, teach us that a child is replaced by an animal. That is the value placed on human life,” said the President.

In his sermon, the Grand Imam of Lagos State, Sheikh Sulaimon Abou-Nolla, emphasized the need for Muslims to fear Allah and promote unity, generosity and sacrifice in line with the teachings of the Holy Book. He wished the President continued health and wisdom, and praised the sacrifices of past Nigerian leaders who helped build a united nation.
