The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police have arrested one Abdulrasheed Muhammad, a Nigerian Navy officer, for the murder of Aminu, son of the former Chief of Naval Staff, the late Vice Admiral II Ibrahim.
FCT Police Commissioner, CP Bennett Igweh, who paraded the suspect on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, said Muhammad killed Aminu and stole his car two weeks ago.
Igweh, however, said the deceased’s stolen car has been recovered and the suspect is assisting the police in further investigations.
CP Igweh said: “About two weeks ago, Aminu Ibrahim, son of the late Vice Admiral II Ibrahim (retd), former Chief of Naval Staff, was robbed and killed in Maitama area of Abuja and his Prado SUV was taken.
“I want to inform you that Abdul Rasheed Muhammad, a serving Nigerian Navy officer, committed the murder.
“He confessed to the crime and we recovered the Jeep Prado,” the police chief said.
In a chat with reporters, Muhammad said that he is a Navy sailor and that he was assigned to the residence of the former Chief of Naval Staff.
Muhammad said: “I was working at home. He wanted to go out at night, around 11:30 p.m. He said he needed security. So, I followed him with my gun.
“On the way, he stopped to check the ATM, as if he was going to buy something. I thought, maybe I would take him to a market or somewhere. Then, when I came out the other door, I shot him, got in the car and left.
“I’m a guard and a Navy sailor. He didn’t do anything to me. I killed him to steal his car,” he said.
SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, also said that on August 23, 2024, during a routine search operation, police officers of the command assaulted the suspect aboard a black Prado SUV.
Adeh said that during questioning, the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation as to how he came into possession of the vehicle.
Accordingly, the police officers took him into custody and preliminary investigations showed that the suspect was a Nigerian Navy sailor on guard duty at the residence of a retired Naval officer.
The FCT Police Command spokesperson said the vehicle belonged to the late Aminu Ibrahim, son of the late Admiral I. Ibrahim, former Chief of Naval Staff.
“Muhammad confessed to killing Aminu and taking the Prado SUV with him on August 18, 2024 at River Benue Street Maitama,” Adeh said.
