The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reasons why it is considering adopting a consensus candidate to fly its flag in the 2027 presidential elections.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, believes that this approach is the most practical and cost-effective option available to the party.
He spoke during an appearance on Arise TV’s One-on-One program on Saturday, explaining that the party had narrowed its candidate selection options to direct and consensus primaries, following amendments to the Election Law that abolished indirect primaries.
“We are trying as hard as possible to adopt a consensus approach because it is the cheapest approach for us. For us, the best scenario is to be able to engineer consensus and that is what we are working on,” he said.
The ADC spokesperson’s comments come as the party continues to attract key figures ahead of 2027, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi among the presidential hopefuls on the ADC platform.

Abdullahi also turned his attention to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), offering a sharp assessment of the party’s internal cohesion and long-term viability, arguing that it has only survived because of President Bola Tinubu’s political influence.
“If APC is stripped of power, APC will actually be nothing. I know the party very well. After Bola Tinubu, it quickly unraveled, even they were shocked. He was the glue that held the party together,” he said.
He described the APC as a “special purpose vehicle” designed to deliver the leadership of the late Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu, arguing that the party had largely served those aims and had little ideological substance beyond them.
Referring to what he described as the APC’s restlessness ahead of the 2027 elections, Abdullahi questioned why a party with 31 governors and full control of the National Assembly was still restless with the opposition’s growing momentum.
“In any free and fair election in Nigeria today, there is no way the APC will win. Why is a party with 31 governors and about 90 percent of national assembly members still panicking? Why are they still trying to destabilize other opposition parties? They should be prepared for Tinubu’s victory considering their extraordinary governance. But they are anxious because they know in a free and fair election, there is no way they can win. Nigerians are tired of the election,” he said.
