Remi Tinubu seeks help from Davido, Burna Boy and Asake to fight hunger

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to Afrobeat stars David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, Damini Ogulu (Burna Boy) and Ahmed Ololade (Asake), to use their wealth to support vulnerable Nigerians struggling with economic hardship in the country.

Mrs Tinubu made the appeal on Saturday while inspecting the National Community Food Bank project for North Central Lokoja, Kogi State.

He said that while artists have earned the right to enjoy the fruits of their labor, they should also set up charitable foundations to empower the less privileged and support small entrepreneurs.

In her opinion, the economic challenges facing the country are too enormous for the federal government to address alone.

“I think it’s the right time to start helping those who need help in the country. I want to appeal to our youth in the entertainment industry,” he said.

The First Lady urged musicians to emulate Senegalese-American singer, Akon, who she described as a global music icon renowned for his humanitarian interventions.

“The Burna Boys of this world, Asake and Davido, we want to see you with one foundation or the other helping the poor with your money. Good cars are good. A Maybach is good and a Rolls-Royce is good, but you can still help,” he said.

He added that successful artists could make a significant contribution by supporting small traders and other small business owners across the country.

“The burden on the government is huge and you can still help. There are sellers of pepper, okra, vegetables, melons, akara and kuli-kuli who need support,” he added.

His comments come amid ongoing concerns over the rising cost of living and widespread economic hardship in the country.

The call also follows public reactions to her recent remarks on the Renewed Hope Agenda, in which she said women are being supported with grants to start businesses such as roasted corn, akara and kuli-kuli initiatives.

Responding to criticism, Ms Tinubu defended the initiative, insisting that such businesses remain a viable source of livelihood.

He cited the example of an Abuja graduate whose Akara business reportedly expanded after receiving support from her office, leading to the hiring of 12 workers.

The First Lady maintained that strengthening micro-enterprises remains one of the practical ways to reduce poverty and create employment opportunities across the country.
