Remo Stars FC were relegated from the Nigerian Premier Football League just one season after winning their first title, following a dramatic conclusion to the 2025/26 campaign on Sunday.
The Sky Blue Stars went into the final round needing an away win against Bendel Insurance FC in Benin to boost their survival hopes, but could only manage a 1-1 draw in a behind-closed-doors encounter. Victor Mbaoma put Remo ahead just before half-time with his 14th league goal of the season, but the hosts scored in added time through Chijioke Akuneto for the crucial equaliser.
Results in other matches only increased the tension, as victories by Niger Tornadoes FC and Warri Wolves FC put Remo in serious danger. Although Kwara United FC suffered a tough 4-0 defeat against already relegated Bayelsa United FC, their superior goal difference proved enough to keep them above the relegation zone.
The final blow came in Owerri, where Kun Khalifat defeated relegated Wikki Tourists FC after a delayed start due to heavy rain. Jonathan Mairiga initially gave Wikki the lead before Uchechukwu Onuoha equalized for the hosts.
Lekan Gabriel later put Kun Khalifat ahead, while Onuoha added a second late goal to secure a victory that confirmed Remo Stars’ relegation to the Nigerian National League. The Sky Blues join Elkanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists among the four teams relegated from the NPFL this season.
