Representatives call for an emergency in the FCT health sector

The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the federal government to declare an emergency in the health sector of the Federal Capital Region (FCT).

This follows the adoption of motion by parliamentary members from Delta State, Nnamdi Ezechi, in the plenary in Abuja.

In his presentation, Ezechi said there was a worrying tension in the health care system at FCT, with government hospitals and too much medical facilities.

He added that the problem had caused lack of bed space and medical personnel in the city.

“Worried that the lack of adequate medical personnel, including doctors, nurses, and other health care workers, further worsen the crisis, reduce the quality of maintenance and increase the burden on some of the available staff.

“If direct intervention is not carried out, the health care crisis can increase to an uncontrolled level, damage the right to health and threaten the welfare of the population in the country’s capital.

“Convinced that the strategic review and improvement of health infrastructure in FCT, along with a comprehensive recruitment encouragement for medical professionals, will meet the urgent needs and ensure better health results,” said the member of the parliament.

Therefore, the DPR urged the Ministry of Health Federal, in collaboration with the FCT administration, to immediately assess the state of health facilities in FCT with the aim of identifying critical areas for expansion, improvement, and allocation of resources.

Parliament also called for the release of emergency funds to increase hospitals, recruitment of medical personnel, and the acquisition of critical medical equipment.
