Rotary honors humanitarian and leadership icons at DISCON 2026 in Abuja

Rotary International District 9127 announced plans to honor some of its members for their outstanding humanitarian and leadership roles.

The icons, according to the District, will be honored during the three-day conference, District Conference 2026 (DISCON), which will be held May 14-16, 2026.

The conference will bring together over 1,000 Rotarians from across Northern Nigeria and the FCT with the theme: “Uniting for Good, Promoting Friendship and Celebrating Service.”

The convener and district governor, Princess Joy Nky Okoro, said the highlight of the conference would be the recognition of outstanding humanitarian service and leadership performance across the district.

Conference will debut Rotary Leadership Talks (RLT); a TED-style platform designed to amplify bold ideas and emerging voices.”

DISCON Planning Committee Chairperson, Dr. Emeka Iloegbunam, said DISCON 2026 will showcase the best of Rotary.

He said: “Our goal is to organize a conference that not only reflects Rotary’s core values, but also creates meaningful engagement across all sectors. From thought-provoking discussions to defining opportunities to cultural experiences, DISCON 2026 will showcase the best of Rotary in action.

“DISCON 2026 is positioned as more than a conference, it is a platform for engagement, collaboration and shared impact, strengthening Rotary’s role as a trusted partner in national development through citizen-led service initiatives.”

Highlighting some of the roles of the district, he said: “Rotary International District 9127 is part of the global Rotary International and covers 16 states in Northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The District continues to play a vital role in advancing humanitarian efforts across northern Nigeria, particularly through peacebuilding and conflict prevention initiatives, disease prevention and treatment, water, sanitation and hygiene, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, community economic development and environmental support. Rotary’s impact is deeply rooted at the grassroots level, from access to healthcare to youth empowerment.”

The District, while emphasizing that the conference represents an opportunity for strategic partnerships, invited corporate organizations, development agencies and media platforms to collaborate to broaden sustainable impact across communities.
