As Muslims prepare for Sallah celebrations amid worsening economic hardship, the Abbasid Foundation, in partnership with Fidelity Bank Plc, has distributed hundreds of food parcels to vulnerable residents of Garki in Abuja.
Founder and CEO of Abbasid Foundation, Hajia Hauwa Abbas, during the meeting in Abuja on Monday, said the food distribution initiative started almost four years ago through the support of Fidelity Bank and has since expanded to several northern states.
He said the bank provides about 1,150 food parcels per month for distribution to destitute communities in northern Nigeria.
“We have been to Kaduna, Zaria, Jere, Abuja, Zamfara, Mokwa in Niger State, Jigawa, Bauchi and Kano. We have basically done the rounds,” he said.
Explaining the reason for the latest intervention in Garki, Hajia Abbas noted that increasing hunger and declining purchasing power influenced the decision to return to the community for a second business.
“Sallah is around the corner and times are tough. You have seen the Garki market; it is almost empty because people no longer have money to buy groceries,” he said.
“Food is available on the market, but the money to buy it is not there. Due to the fuel situation and economic difficulties, we have decided to support the people of this community again.”
