SDP’s Adebayo says his government will consider ‘careful rollback of fuel subsidies’

Presidential candidate from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 election, Adewole Adebayo, has stated that if elected to power, his government will support a careful rollback of fuel subsidies.

The debate over fuel subsidies is at the center of attention ahead of the 2027 presidential election amid rising fuel prices at gas stations.

Although the government led by President Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress, APC, has insisted on eliminating fuel subsidies, several opposition candidates have called for the policy to be rolled back.

Adebayo, speaking through his campaign team, the Adebayo Movement for President, MAP, highlighted his position on petroleum and energy policy, saying he supports a “carefully considered rollback of fuel subsidies” because he believes it “can help reduce energy costs and support small and medium-sized businesses.”

According to the campaign team, Adebayo’s economic agenda includes investment in agriculture, affordable energy, domestic refining and energy logistics, industrial development and improving electricity distribution.

“Adebayo believes that reliable electricity is critical to expanding manufacturing, creating jobs, strengthening businesses and developing modern infrastructure,” he added.

The campaign team, further highlighting the reasons why Nigerians should support Adebayo, said that Adebayo is one of the candidates who has submitted a comprehensive policy document outlining proposed solutions to the challenges facing the country.

The candidate has released a 117-page manifesto containing policy proposals, implementation schedule and national development strategy, he said.

On youth development, MAP said Adebayo understands the challenges facing Nigeria’s young generation and is committed to addressing them through education, skills acquisition and empowerment programs.

His campaign slogan, ‘Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity’, is a reflection of his country’s priorities.

On national security, MAP said Adebayo had proposed retraining, equipping and increasing salaries of security personnel, arguing that Nigeria must provide adequate support to those responsible for protecting the country.

The campaign team further noted that Adebayo’s experience working with the UN and African Union on peacebuilding efforts, and his role in Liberia’s Peace and Reconciliation Commission, will raise Nigeria’s diplomatic profile.

“His experience can help Nigeria strengthen international partnerships, attract investment and build trust among global business partners,” the campaign team added while noting that he is committed to transparency, accountability and effective citizen participation in governance.

Emphasizing that responsible leadership and community involvement in decision-making are critical to overcoming divisions in Nigeria based on region and religion, MAP urges Nigerians to consider alternatives to the current government and the established political class.

The report states that Nigeria needs leadership focused on poverty alleviation, security and national development to overcome current challenges.
