The state government of Lagos has sealed 35 supermarkets throughout the state for the sale of expired products between January and April 2025.
The commissioner for trade, the cooperative, the trade and investments, Mrs. Fubashade Ambrose, made known this Tuesday during a ministerial press briefing to commemorate the second anniversary of the second mandate of the governor Babajide Sanwo-Oell.
Ambrose said that the application action was part of the current efforts to ensure consumer safety and protect public health in Lagos.
He explained that in addition to the closures, many other shops have been sanctioned and fined for the stocks of goods expired in violation of consumer protection laws.
“The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency was proactive in monitoring points of sale and consumer education on their rights,” said the commissioner, urging residents to report cases that involve expired or poor products.
The repression of Lagos aligns with a wider national effort to free the market of unsafe goods. At the beginning of January, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (Nafdac) closed a warehouse in Kaduna supplied with foods and cosmetics expired for an estimated value of N75 million.
Also in February, Nafdac discovered an illegal drug reconfecture operation in the village of Umumeje, ososioma ngwa, state of Abia, where large quantities of expired drugs were re -evaluated and prepared for resale.
The state government of Lagos has reiterated its commitment to safeguard public health and guarantees only safe and quality products for consumers.
“We will continue to intensify our surveillance and application and urge companies to conform to all regulatory requirements,” added Ambrose.
