The Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps have launched another coordinated operation against illegal mining activities in the Federal Capital Territory, leading to the arrest of 15 suspects at a mining site in Kuje Area Council.
Details of the operation were made public on Sunday in Abuja through a statement issued by the Operations Commander Marshal of Mines and Assistant Corps Commander, Attah John Onoja.
According to Onoja, troops of the 176th Guards Battalion in Gwagwalada initially arrested the suspects before transferring them to Mining Marshals for further investigation.
“The operation follows the arrest and surrender of 15 suspected illegal miners by troops of the 176th Guards Battalion, Gwagwalada, which security officials described as part of ongoing efforts to curb economic sabotage and environmental damage associated with illegal mining.
“A joint investigative visit was then undertaken to the site in accordance with standard procedures guiding Mining Marshals operations, as authorities moved to strengthen the investigation and ensure prosecution of the suspect.”
Residents in affected communities have reportedly expressed their concerns over environmental degradation and security issues related to unregulated mining activities in the region.
Onoja reiterated the NSCDC’s resolve to maintain strict law enforcement measures and deepen cooperation with other security agencies in combating illegal mining operations across the country.

He explained that the corps leadership remained committed to the principles of “Coordination, Collaboration and Cooperation” in carrying out security operations effectively.
The NSCDC official added that the recent joint mission with the Nigerian Army demonstrated the importance of intelligence sharing and interagency partnerships in tackling illegal mining and related criminal activities.
“After the initial investigation was completed, Mohammadu Sani and 14 other people were charged to court.
“This operation is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to eradicate illegal mining networks and protect natural resources and host communities across the country,” he said.
