Capitol Hill, February 28, 2025/ Sinoe County Senator Crayton O. Duncan has written Plenary requesting that the commerce minister and Commerce Inspector General be invited to explain the causes of rising prices of commodities on the Liberian market and remedial action being put in place.

Sen. Ducan, who is Vice Chairman of Ways, Means, Finance & Budget and chair of the subcommittee on Expenditures, expressed serious frustration over the skyrocketing prices of commodities on the Liberian market.

Sen. Ducan, in his communication dated February 27 and addressed to Senate Pro-tempore Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, reminded his colleagues that the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, responsible for the growth and development of Liberia’s economy and international trade and with a regulatory mandate to handle the issue of commodity prices, seems to be reneging on its role when it comes to price control.

He further indicated that the lack of measures to curb the rising prices of commodities in the country, coupled with the daily devaluation of the Liberian Dollar, has brought economic hardship for citizens.

Senator Duncan explained that for the Senate to possibly institute legislation that could remedy the situation, it is important that Plenary invite the commerce officials to appear before it to explain the cause of the current persistent rise in prices of commodities and also to tell them the plans put in place to solve this national problem.

He recalled that when the Minister of Commerce, Madam Magdalene Shelley-Dagoseh, assumed the role of Minister of Commerce and Industry, she vowed economic transformation.

“We have come to work. It is time to work. Let us prepare ourselves to deliver on the expectations of our consumers and our President,” she declared at the time. The expectations of consumers and perhaps our President seem to be dashed. Inviting them, therefore, is my plea,” he concluded. Edited by Othello B. Garblah.
