Aboh Mbaise’s Silversports Football Club are back in the Imo State League, 16 years after they last participated in the competition.

The club, owned by Silvernews Communication CEO Kennedy Onwunali, made a strong statement during its first league appearance 16 years ago, proving its competitiveness by holding its own against established teams and drawing all three league matches, including a notable encounter with eventual league winners Mnamohа FC.

Upon returning to competition, Silversports stepped up their preparations with a series of friendlies. The team recorded two wins and two losses at one stage of its formation, one of the losses coming against Emirate FC.

The young team have continued to show promise ahead of the new league season, with impressive outings in their matches while they are in the league to gain experience for the future.

The team is built around talented players under the age of 20, most of whom are secondary school students. To add experience and leadership to the team, four players from the senior team that participated in last year’s Imo State Club Owners League have been added.

Silversports is led by experienced coach Frank Mbata, a respected figure in grassroots football development in Imo State. Mbata was part of the coaching team credited with discovering and nurturing talent including Kelechi Iheanacho and other young players who have made an impact in football.

The increase in the number of clubs participating in the Imo State League has been linked to the direction of leadership and emphasis on grassroots football development by the Imo State Football Association led by advocate Ifeanyi Dike, providing more opportunities for clubs and emerging talent across the state.

Meanwhile, the Imo FA has announced that the draws for the 2026 league season will be held on Thursday 18 June 2026 at 11am at the Imo FA office.

According to Imo FA Deputy Secretary, Comrade Emeka Nwaokorie, officials of the 17 registered clubs are expected to attend the draw ceremony with proof of their 2026 affiliation and championship registration.

The return of Silversports FC marks another chapter in the club’s history as it continues its mission to promote youth development and competitive football in Imo State.
