Team Nigeria field opens for CAA, Okon-George wins gold in Abidjan


Nigeria has opened a training camp in Lagos as preparations intensify for the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships, which begin in Accra, Ghana, on May 12.

Athletes representing the country at the world relays in Botswana moved straight to camp after returning to Nigeria on Wednesday afternoon.

Training activities are expected to begin on Thursday evening at the Yabatech Sports Complex, with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria moving quickly to finalize preparations for the continental championship. The 24 athletes who competed at the World Relays automatically secured a place on the team for the championships in Accra.

They will be joined by another 27 athletes invited by the AFN, bringing the expected team size to 51 athletes for the competition in Ghana.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Patience Okon-George continued her impressive start to the 2026 season by claiming victory in the women’s 400 meters at the Continental Tour meeting in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Wednesday
