Former member of the House of Representatives and one-time Chief of Staff to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, has officially left the ruling party to join the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) as political realignment intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dawaki officially joined the opposition party on Monday in a meeting with NDC leader and founder of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence on Miller Road in Kano.
As part of the reception ceremony, the former APC supporter was adorned with the distinctive red hat synonymous with the Kwankwasiyya movement, symbolizing his official entry into the political bloc.
The defection comes shortly after Dawaki reportedly failed to secure the APC consensus ticket for the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency ahead of the next election cycle.
Confirming the development, Saifullahi Hassan, Kwankwaso’s media assistant, announced in a statement on Monday that Dawaki had joined the NDC along with his supporters.

“The leadership today welcomed former Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Mustapha Bala Dawaki, popularly known as Mai Gidan Ruwa, into the NDC Kwankwasiyya movement,” Hassan wrote in a Facebook post.
Political analysts described the move as another significant change in Kano’s political landscape, especially as the ruling and opposition parties continue to consult, negotiate and build alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Before being appointed as Chief of Staff to the APC National Chairman, Dawaki represented the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
His latest political move adds to the wave of defections and strategic repositioning currently reshaping party and alliance structures across Kano State.
