The Bafana Bafana dozen: a friendly farce in the run-up to 2026

Although Bafana Bafana landed at their base in Mexico before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following them behind is quite a drama.

The farewell of the South African MNT to the fans before their departure to North America was not a bed of roses.

On and off the field, Bafana Bafana had to endure the unexpected delay with the issuance of travel documents.

As if that were not enough, on the field the team’s last home game – which was played at the Orlando Stadium – against Nicaragua will be remembered with even greater embarrassment.

the drama

During the preparation match, which ended goalless, Hugo Broos’ team had 12 players on the field at some point (11 field players and 1 goalkeeper).

The oversight occurred in the second half of the game. Defender Nkosinathi Sibisi was replaced by Ime Okon, but the latter did not realize he had been taken off and continued playing.

Although the violation went unnoticed; even by the match referees, for at least more than 5 seconds, it was Sibisi who would then notify his teammate to leave the field of play.

Former FIFA referee and television analyst Victor Hlungwani was the eagle eye who amplified the incident.

During his appearance on SABC’s SportsZone programme, Hlungwani criticized officials.

Meanwhile, the issue has sparked concern among Bafana Bafana, who fear the consequences of such a crime.

According to the Laws of the Game, if a team is found to have an extra player on the field, play must be stopped immediately, the offending player must be shown a yellow card and ordered to leave the field. Any goal scored while the extra player was involved may also be disallowed.

Beyond on-field sanctions, FIFA takes an especially tough stance when it comes to international matches. A national team found guilty of fielding 12 players may be forced to forfeit the match, granting the opposition a 3-0 victory.

The national association could also be hit by heavy financial sanctions, while team officials responsible for substitutions and match administration could face suspensions.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana will continue to prepare for the World Cup ahead of their opening match against co-hosts Mexico on June 11 in Group A.
