Human rights complaints in April doubles Jan-March

… as the Commission receives 261,483 complaints

Abuja (Core reporter) The April Human Rights Commission (NHRC) dashboard) has shown that there was an increase in cases of violation of human rights across the country. The Commission received 261,483 complaints, the number greater than January 2025 the complaints put together.

However, in his speech to the presentation of the monthly dashboard for human rights of the Commission in Abuja, the executive secretary, dr. Tony Ojukwu (San) said that the number of complaints received in April by the Commission represented only the visible part of a much deeper crisis. “Our observatory has documented alarming tendencies, widespread violations of human rights, forced movements and uncontrolled violence, in particular in the states affected by the conflicts of the country.”

Ojukwu said: “Our human rights situation in April was the most gloomy we saw in almost a year. The killings in the states of the plateau and Benue, as well as the rebirth of Boko Haram and Iswap attacks in the state of Borno left hundreds of dead and injured citizens.

“Nigeria is a signatory of international tools for human rights and has also issued constitutional provisions and laws that protect the human person. In particular, section 14 (2) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides that” the safety and well -being of the people will be the main purpose.

“The crisis in the central belt of Nigeria is not new. It is persisted for decades. Yet the spread of continuous blood, and our national speech too often deals with these atrocities as a place for the order. National and international obligations to protect and fulfill the right to life and the right to dignity of the human person.

“The silence in the face of injustice is complicity. Every inability to appoint these violations, to investigate and consider responsible the authors represent a betrayal of our national and moral responsibilities. It is denied on our national, regional and international obligations to protect human rights,” he said.

While presented the dashboard of the April situation, Hillary Ogbonna, said that North Central continued to drive other regions with the number of violations of human rights, stating that in April NC recorded 93, 091 cases, followed by the North West with 54, 051, south to the south with 39, 312, south -ovest -30, 420, north -st -28, 417 and south. -est with 16, 192 tears.

On the violations based on the genre, domestic violence continued to overcome the chat with 6, 135 in April, as well as sexual violence with 2, 220 and rape with 11 complaints.

The abandoned child remained on a constant increase. Ogbonna observed that it was the real question in the violations of the rights of minors, stating that it triggers multiple violations of human rights.

He stressed that the month of April recorded 570 murders throughout the country with 60% home in Benue, Borno and Plateau. Benue recorded 139 murders in April, in the same way Borno with 85, Plateau 119 and 33 other states including FCT together recorded 227 murders.

These murders did not include death by chance of any kind, but rather the death orchestrated by the action on no actors such as Banditi, Boko Haram, Lakowura, vigilante among others.
