The court fixed July 10 to decide on 57 properties of former AGF Malami

The Federal High Court in Abuja has set July 10, 2026 as the new date for decision in a lawsuit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) seeking final confiscation of 57 properties linked to Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

Presiding judge Joyce Abdulmalik had previously set a decision for Monday, July 6, 2026 after both parties adopted their final process and argued the case on May 26. However, the judge moved his decision to Friday, July 10, 2026.

The EFCC earlier obtained a temporary confiscation order on the assets, worth over N212 billion. The properties are located in Abuja, Kano, Kebbi and Kaduna. The EFCC is of the opinion that the property is the result of official corruption and abuse of office.

Malami’s legal team opposed the move, arguing that the assets were legally acquired by the former minister who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

At the final hearing, Jibrin Okutepa, SAN, counsel for the EFCC prayed for the court to grant the motion, relying on the 47-paragraph written statement and 46 pieces of evidence submitted in support of the motion.

Okutepa argued that Malami and the other respondents in the matter failed to satisfactorily explain the legal source of the assets and urged the court to order permanent confiscation of the assets.

Responding, Adedayo Adedeji, SAN, attorney for Malami and other respondents, asked the court to dismiss the application and set aside the interim confiscation order previously granted.

Adedeji relied on a counter-statement which was dismissed by Malami, arguing that the EFCC case was based on suspicion and not reliable evidence.

Judge Abdulmalik set a date of July 10, 2026 to make a decision on the matter.
