The EFCC invited me for a discussion, not an arrest, says ECN FG – THISAGE

The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Mustapha Abdullahi, has dismissed reports that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), clarifying that he had only honored an invitation from the Abuja-based anti-corruption agency.

Abdullahi clarified a statement released on Wednesday through his media aide, Alhaji Abdulrasaq Danjuma, following media reports linking him to an alleged money laundering investigation.

According to the statement, the ECN boss said his visit to the EFCC was voluntary and in line with due process, transparency and respect for constituted authorities.

“It is important to clarify that he was not arrested, but voluntarily participated in the assignment as a responsible public official committed to transparency and accountability,” the statement said.

The head of the Energy Commission has launched an appeal to the public to refrain from spreading speculation, disinformation, sensationalist comments and unverified claims capable of distorting the facts or creating unnecessary tensions.

He urged Nigerians, especially supporters, partners and stakeholders in the energy sector, to remain calm and allow relevant agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without interference.

“At this time, we respectfully urge supporters, associates, stakeholders and members of the public to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while the relevant authorities carry out their constitutional responsibilities,” the statement added.

Abdullahi further stressed that matters currently discussed in the public domain remain allegations subject to investigation and due process of law.

“It is also important to emphasize that matters currently in the public domain remain allegations subject to investigation and due process of law.

“In line with long-established principles of justice and fairness, every individual has the right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said.

The clarification follows widespread reports that EFCC operatives arrested the Director General of the ECN over alleged financial transactions under investigation.

However, at the time of filing this report, the anti-corruption agency has not released any official statement.
