Goodluck Philip, a security guard, was arrested at the Life Camp Court in Abuja on Thursday for allegedly stealing his employer’s clothes and foodstuffs.
Police charged Phillip, 20, who lives in Jukwai Abuja, with trespassing and theft.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecuting lawyer, Mr Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Mr Nwokuma Emmanuel of Rainbow Estate Life Camp, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station on April 16.
Nwachukwu said the complainant’s neighbor called the complainant to report that his house had been broken into.
He said the complainant rushed back to his house and found that the accused, who he had employed as a security guard to save and protect his property, had entered his house.
Nwachukwu told the court that the complainant alleged that the accused stole 15 sets of clothes worth N560,00, groceries worth N300,000, his wedding ring, five pairs of shoes and perfume.
He said the complainant also alleged that the accused made off with $700 and N87,000 in cash, his wife’s ATM card, foreign chocolate worth N140,000, jewelery and other items.
He informed the court that during the police investigation the accused made a confessional statement, admitting to the crime.
Nwachukwu said some of the stolen items were recovered by the accused.
The prosecutor claimed that the crime violated the provisions of articles 348 and 249 of the penal code.
The magistrate, Best Ojukwu, admitted that the accused posted bail in the sum of N200,000 with a surety of the same amount.
