The tension increases while the police retained the ondo inspector for WhatsApp post on the planned national protest

An inspector of the police forces of Nigeria in the State of Ondo, Emoruwa Olabode, was arrested and detained for his alleged involvement in a WhatsApp pole connected to a national protest planned by retired police officers scheduled for July 21, 2025.

The platform collected that the inspector Olabode, attached to the Idanre police division, was taken from his service assignment on Friday 4 July and brought to the Department of Criminal Investigations (Scid) of Akure on the orders of the Police General Inspector, Kayode Egbetokun.

The officer is one of the three administrators of a group of WhatsApp for police staff who are presumed to have circulated messages that promote the planned protest. According to reports, the other two administrators were also detained.

The sources have confirmed that Olabode should be transferred to the general strength quarter in Abuja on Monday 7 July, where further interrogations will be conducted by the Department of H intelligence of the Force (FID).

His arrest has aroused growing concerns about the freedom of expression in the ranks of the police forces, in particular in the face of the growing agitation for improved well -being for both service officers and retirement.

His wife speaks

Speaking with Saharareportters, Olabode’s wife said that her husband denied to violate any internal rules, underlining that the WhatsApp group in question was in question since 2015 and was mainly used for equal education and discussions on the best police practices.

“He told me that the group is governed by clear rules, which are regularly shared to remind the members of acceptable conduct. It was surprised by the arrest, above all because no specific post has been shown to him,” he said.

He also revealed that his husband’s declaration was taken in caution, but that the family remains in the dark on the exact nature of the accusations.

“It has been in detention since Friday. We don’t even know the specific crime. We are only told that the question is managed by Fid in Abuja,” he added.

A retired police superintendent, the CSP Iwamituigha Raphael Irowainu, also confirmed the arrest, citing his wife and assistant police commissioner, Okpaleke Object Anthony, as an officer who led the stop team. However, when contacted by Saharareportters, ACP Okpapaleke denied any involvement, saying: “I am not responsible for the case”.

Context of the protest

The arrest comes among the growing tensions on the worsening of post-service conditions for police pensioners. The retired officers under the union of retired police officers are mobilizing for what they describe how the “mother of all peaceful protests”, asking for an immediate withdrawal of the Nigeria police from the pension regime contribution (CPS).

The group claims that the current pension model has left many of its impoverished, abandoned and vulnerable members, with reports of financial humiliation, delayed rights and even premature deaths due to bad post-service care.

They are asking for the passage of the bill on the police pension, they believe would create a dedicated organ to manage the police pensions separately from the largest CPS framework managed by the National Pension Commission (Pencom).

The protest of 21 July should attract participation from all 36 states and from the territory of the federal capital. The organizers insisted on the fact that the event will be peaceful and without political nuances.

This is not the first great demonstration of the group. At the beginning of this year, from February 24 to March 3, they occupied the complex of the National Assembly in Abuja, presenting petitions to the key legislative committees and asking for legislative actions on their requests. But months later, the bill on the police pension remains blocked, pushing another lap of mobilization.

The arrest of the Inspector Olabode is attracting criticism from the supporters of civil rights, who warn that the internal suppression of the voices of the officers will intensify only the tensions and expand the gap between leadership and rank officers and files.

Legal experts are already questioning the legality of possession of a service officer with respect to the activity of social media which has yet to be demonstrated as insubordinate or seditious.

“These are the well -being of the officers who risk daily. If those within the system cannot speak, how will the reforms happen?” He asked for a lawyer who begged anonymity.
