Tinubu approves £2 billion aid for victims of Plateau attack, orders urgent review of peace plan

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday approved a P2 billion emergency relief package for the victims of the March 29 attack on Angwa Rukuban in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, charging political, traditional and community leaders to take decisive steps to end the recurring violence in the state..

The President also directed Plateau stakeholders to urgently review and implement previous recommendations of the Government White Paper on past security crises, insisting that only deliberate political will and accountability can ensure lasting peace.

The development was made known after a three-hour interactive session between the President and a 32-man delegation from Plateau State held in Abuja, as part of follow-up engagements on the recent killings.

During the meeting, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Mohammed Sani Doro announced the approval of the ₦2 billion relief fund for affected families, describing it as part of the federal government’s immediate response to the humanitarian needs arising from the attack.

President Tinubu, in his address, urged Plateau leaders led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to return home and convene a broad leadership consultative meeting that would focus on implementing existing peace and security reports already documented in previous White Papers.

He stressed that repeated failure to implement past recommendations has contributed to cycles of violence, warning that leaders at all levels must take responsibility to break this pattern.

“As leaders, you must come home, convene, review the gazette and previous recommendations and agree on implementation,” Tinubu said, adding that tolerance and inclusion remain central to sustainable peace.

He also called for unity across ethnic and religious lines, warning against individuals or groups deliberately stoking tensions for political or personal gain. According to him, such actors must be identified and made to face the law.

The President further stressed that Plateau State, historically known for peaceful coexistence, must reclaim its identity through conscious leadership actions, justice and fairness to all residents, regardless of background.

Governor Mutfwang, in his response, thanked the President for what he described as consistent federal support, stressing that the meeting marked a rare moment of unity as former governors, traditional rulers, religious leaders and youth representatives came together under one platform.

He promised a renewed commitment to peacebuilding, poverty reduction and social inclusion, adding that state leaders were determined to bridge religious and ethnic divides to rebuild trust and accelerate development.

Also, the Gbong Gwon Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, commended the President’s intervention and called for increased security deployment, including surveillance infrastructure, as well as accelerated resettlement of internally displaced persons to their ancestral homes.

Members of the delegation unanimously committed to supporting the peace process, but warned that lasting stability will depend on sincerity, justice and continued political commitment from all stakeholders.

The meeting concluded with the joint decision of Plateau leaders and the Presidency to pursue a coordinated peace framework aimed at addressing both immediate humanitarian concerns and long-term structural causes of insecurity in the State.
