Tinubu has no intention of renaming Nigeria, nor abolishing Sharia law – Presidency

…Says a fake viral report, designed to destabilize the country ahead of 2027 polls

The Presidency on Thursday dismissed a viral report that President Bola Tinubu plans to make sweeping constitutional changes to rename Nigeria the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the North, describing the claims as false, misleading and politically motivated.

In a statement, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the report was fabricated and deliberately released to stoke tension and undermine national stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the Presidency, the statements – attributed to anonymous sources – are part of a broader disinformation campaign aimed at overheating the political system and creating distrust in the government.

The statement further refutes allegations that President Tinubu was preparing to forward a draft constitutional amendment codenamed “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly on December 15.

The Presidency stressed that there is no such proposal, adding that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a rigorous legal process that cannot be initiated or concluded unilaterally by the President.

He explained that any amendment to the constitution must go through extensive legislative scrutiny, including approval by at least two-thirds of the members of both houses of the National Assembly and ratification by no fewer than 24 state Houses of Assembly.

The Presidency also reiterated that there is no plan to abolish Sharia law or alter the country’s constitutional structure in the way suggested by the viral report.

Reaffirming the government’s priorities, the statement said President Tinubu remains focused on implementing ongoing economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and providing better welfare to Nigerians.

The government has warned against the spread of fake news, noting that politically motivated disinformation is likely to increase as political activity intensifies ahead of the election cycle.

He urged Nigerians to ignore the report in its entirety, describing its initiators as “agents of destabilization” seeking to inflame divisions and disrupt national cohesion.
