Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored a brace as Galatasaray defeated city rivals Fenerbahce 2-1 in a thrilling Turkish Super Lig derby on Monday, helping the defending champions return to the top of the table.
The Super Eagles striker produced a decisive first-half performance at RAMS Park in Istanbul, scoring in the 29th and 44th minutes to give Galatasaray a two-goal lead before the break.
The victory earned Galatasaray a crucial three points in the ninth round of the league season and strengthened their position in the title race, while Fenerbahce were left to rue a missed opportunity to close the gap on their rivals.
Osimhen scores twice in the first half
Osimhen opened the scoring in the 29th minute after receiving a pass from Baris Alper Yilmaz before firing into the net to give Galatasaray the lead.
The Nigerian striker continued to trouble Fenerbahce’s defense with his movement and attacking threat, and his efforts paid off just before half-time.
In the 44th minute, the 27-year-old headed the ball into the net following Davinson Sanchez’s attempt to double Galatasaray’s lead and send the home fans into celebration.
His second goal gave Galatasaray a comfortable lead before half-time and put the hosts in a strong position to secure victory in the highly anticipated Istanbul derby.
Fenerbahce come back after the break
Fenerbahce returned in the second half determined to get back into the game and reduced the deficit in the 62nd minute through Irfan Can Kahveci.
The midfielder produced an acrobatic overhead kick to beat the Galatasaray defense and give the visitors renewed hope of salvaging a result from the match.
The goal increased the pressure on the hosts as Fenerbahce pushed forward in search of a late equaliser.
However, Galatasaray held on to protect their lead and secure a 2-1 victory over their city rivals.
Despite Fenerbahce’s response in the second half, Osimhen’s brace in the first half proved decisive in resolving the match.
Galatasaray returns to the top
The result put Galatasaray back at the top of the Turkish Super Lig table with 22 points from nine games.
Fenerbahce, meanwhile, remained on 16 points, leaving them six points behind their rivals following their derby defeat.
The result represented a major boost for Galatasaray in their quest for another league title, especially considering the importance of the matches against their direct domestic rivals.
Victories in derbies often carry additional weight due to the fierce competition between the two Istanbul clubs, whose matches attract considerable attention from fans across Turkey and beyond.
Osimhen underlines the importance for Galatasaray
Osimhen’s performance further underlined his importance to Galatasaray, with the Nigerian international scoring the goals that made the difference in a hotly contested match.
His ability to find the net twice in the first half gave his team the platform to withstand Fenerbahce’s pressure in the second half.
The striker has remained one of the key figures in both Galatasaray and the Super Eagles’ attack, with his finishing ability and physical presence making him a serious threat to opposing defences.
The brace against Fenerbahce will further strengthen his standing among Galatasaray fans, especially as the club looks to maintain its position at the top of the Turkish Super Lig.
As the season continues, Galatasaray will look to build on their derby triumph and maintain the momentum, while Fenerbahce will aim to bounce back from the setback and keep their title ambitions on track.
