The Nigerian senior team’s attack in the upcoming Unity Cup friendly tournament will be led by the trio of on-loan Nice striker Terem Moffi, Plymouth striker Owen Oseni and Rafiu Durosinmi of Pisa relegated from Serie A.
We can exclusively reveal that despite the enormous pressure, Chelle passed on the option of handing a withdrawal to the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho or Tolu Arokodare to settle for the aforementioned trio.
Moffi is expected to be their number one in attack in the absence of Victor Osimhen, after missing out on the AFCON call-up due to inactivity caused by his decision to leave Nice after being attacked by the club’s fans.
He recently won the Portuguese league title with his loan club FC Porto, although it is not certain he will get a new contract and he will return to Nice before a decision is made.
Oseni, from the English third division team, is the most surprising, but Chelle is said to be quite impressed with what he has seen from him, apart from the fact that he has ten goals.
His ability to run down the channel, press high up the pitch and his aggressive attitude convinced the coach. Durosinmi has long been on Chelle’s radar, hence his inclusion despite his difficulties in Pisa since his move in January.
Durosinmi made the provisional Super Eagles roster for the AFCON, but missed the final roster. Millwall’s Femi Azeez completes the forward list.
Nigeria will begin the defense of the title they won last year against Zimbabwe, where a victory will pit them against the winner of the other round of the tournament which is between India and Jamaica.
Chelle, who said he will use the tournament to trial new players and also give a chance to fringe players, including those in the Nigerian Premier Football League, has already decided on his key attacking options.
