A much-reorganized Super Eagles team will take center stage tonight when Nigeria take on Zimbabwe in the semi-final of the Unity Cup 2026 at The Valley in London, with head coach Éric Chelle expected to give opportunities to several new faces and local stars.

Nigeria will go into the match without several key players after captain Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, Bruno Onyemaechi, Raphael Onyedika and Akor Adams missed the team’s final training session on Monday and were unavailable for the clash. His absence is expected to open the door for fringe players and newcomers eager to impress Chelle ahead of future international assignments.

Experienced goalkeeper Francis Uzoho is likely to start alongside defenders Igoh Ogbu and Tochukwu Nnadi, while retired duo Terem Moffi and Alhassan Yusuf could also feature prominently. Championship winger Femi Azeez and Plymouth Argyle striker Owen Oseni are in line for potential debuts after impressive seasons in England, while NPFL players invited to the tournament will also hope to make a strong statement on the international stage.

Zimbabwe, captained by Marvelous Nakamba, are also rebuilding and several new faces are expected to parade. The Warriors frustrated Nigeria twice during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, earning a 1-1 draw in Rwanda before earning a spectacular late equalizer in Uyo.

Chelle, however, insists that his players are up to the challenge and urges them to play with courage and intensity.

“Like I said, we have a vision for this national team (Super Eagles),” Chelle said before the game. “Some of the new players are ready and motivated. Players from the NPFL, players from the European leagues, have the opportunity to break into the Super Eagles (main) team.

“When you play a game like this, the first thing is the attitude, the state of mind. First they have to show us their state of mind. The most important thing for them is to know that when you play football you make some mistakes.

“This is not the question of mistakes. It is the question of what you can do after mistakes. It is a question of the state of mind. The only pressure they can have is to fight for every ball. It is run, run, run.”

The Unity Cup semi-final is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm Nigerian time at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic FC.
