Why West Ham’s late equalizer was ruled out against Arsenal – Premier League

The Premier League has released an explanation for VAR’s decision to disallow a late goal scored by Callum Wilson during West Ham United’s clash with Arsenal FC

Arsenal looked set to take all three points after Leandro Trossard scored the only goal of the match.

West Ham thought they had salvaged a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time when Wilson forced the ball into the net and the referee initially allowed the goal to stand.

However, VAR intervened and advised the referee to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

After reviewing the footage, the referee overturned the decision and instead awarded Arsenal a free kick.

In a statement published on

“After review, West Ham’s number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. The final decision is a direct free kick,” read the statement.

The result saw Arsenal extend their lead over Manchester City FC to five points with just two games left in the season.
