Wimbledon: Serena Williams returns to singles action

Serena Williams was drawn to face Australia’s Maya Joint in the first round of Wimbledon on Friday, as the American legend returns to singles after four years.

Williams will retire in 2022, but the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion made a sensational return playing Queen’s Club and doubles at the Berlin Open in early June.

The 44-year-old was awarded a wild card into Wimbledon singles, a tournament she has won seven times. If Williams beats world number 53 Joint, a 20-year-old who has won just one of her last 14 matches, the American could face 29th seed rising star Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in the second round.

A second-round win would raise the possibility of a potentially successful third-round draw against defending champion Iga Swiatek, who begins her title defense against American Taylor Townsend. Williams, who trained at Wimbledon last week, last played a singles match nearly four years ago at the US Open in what appeared to be her farewell to the sport.
