Curacao had a difficult start to their first FIFA World Cup campaign after suffering a 7-1 defeat to Germany in their first Group E match at Houston Stadium on Saturday.

The World Cup debutants briefly threatened to spring an upset when Livano Comenencia canceled out Félix Nmecha’s opening goal with a deflected shot past veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. However, Germany quickly regained control and punished Curacao’s defensive errors to take a commanding lead before halftime.

Nico Schlotterbeck restored Germany’s lead with a header from a corner before Kai Havertz converted a penalty in stoppage time after Felix Nmecha was fouled in the area. Germany maintained that momentum in the second half, with Jamal Musiala scoring moments after the restart, while Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav added more goals as the Europeans pulled away.

Havertz completed his brace late on to cap a dominant display from Julian Nagelsmann’s side, giving Curacao a tough lesson in their World Cup debut. Despite the tough defeat, the Caribbean nation made history by reaching the tournament and will now seek to regroup for the next group stage match.
