Fighting in the region has escalated in recent months as clashes between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese government escalate.
Border battle
They are fighting over strategic towns and bases near the Ethiopian border, as part of a wider battle for control of Sudan that has been ongoing since April 2023.
In recent weeks, thousands of civilians have been forced to flee the region due to ongoing attacks.
Dujarric condemned the “horrific reports” and stressed that attacks directed against civilians are prohibited under international humanitarian law.
He called for those responsible for these violations to be held accountable.
Syria: Civilians bear the brunt as Israeli attacks intensify
Israel’s military offensive into southern Syria has intensified, with around 280 incidents recorded in September alone – the highest monthly figure this year, according to the UN human rights office (OHCHR) said on Friday.
These incidents included reported raids on homes, restrictions on movement, harassment of civilians and arbitrary detentions.
Spokeswoman Shabia Mantoo said 49 Syrians were believed to still be in Israeli custody, although the number had not been independently verified.
Former detainees described detention lasting more than a year in some cases, with no reason given and transfers to unknown facilities. They also alleged torture and ill-treatment, including beatings, being forced to stand for long periods of time, and threats against their families.
Recent shootings
On Monday, a 22-year-old man from the town of Jaba in Quneitra province was killed by Israeli forces near Al-Hamidiyah.
He was reportedly walking at night and was unaware of the Israeli military position ahead of him. No warning shots are known to have been fired.
On Wednesday, a disabled farmer was reportedly shot in the leg during a stampede in northern Quneitra, then detained due to bleeding and released an hour and a half later.
High Commissioner Volker Türk called for an “immediate and impartial investigation” into the killings and urged Israel to stop harassing civilians.
Gaza: Women and girls are on the front lines of the humanitarian crisis
In Gaza, nearly 50,000 women and girls have been killed or seriously injured since the start of the Hamas-Israel war in October 2023, according to a specialized UN agency. UN Women.
This number includes more than 38,000 people killed and 11,700 people suffering injuries so severe that they now live with lifelong disabilities.
Today, almost all women and girls have been forced to leave their homes, and most now live in tents or amidst the ruins of their homes.
Women now lead one in four households in the Gaza Strip, often as they face greater poverty and repeated displacement with increasingly limited resources.
Trauma burden
Sofia Calltorp from PBB Women tells the story of Nour, one of the women behind these statistics.
Her house was destroyed, and her husband, a nurse, was detained – she has not heard from him since. Sometimes, he said he was so lost in his thoughts that he was unable to respond even to his children.
At the same time, because of funding cuts, nearly two-thirds of organizations contacted by the agency in Gaza and the West Bank said they were forced to put women and girls on waiting lists or turn them away altogether.
Every organization surveyed also reported increases in gender-based violence, poverty and mental health stress from 2025. And all but one organization saw an increase in child marriage.
