Yobe journalists pay hospital bills for 40 indigent patients

In a heartwarming show of solidarity, the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents Chapel in Yobe State has stepped away from the newsroom to directly impact lives by offering cash support to 40 vulnerable patients at the Damaturu Specialist Hospital.

The media professionals also visited and made donations to the Family Support Hospital, located in Damaturu, capital of Yobe State.

The initiative, which is part of the chapel’s community development initiative, seeks to ease the financial burden on patients struggling with skyrocketing medical costs.

The president of the Chapel, Nabilu Balarabe, noted that the role of the profession has a two-fold aspect.

“It’s not just about holding the government accountable, it’s about touching the lives of the oppressed,” he said.

He reiterated the group’s dedication to this cause, promising to sustain support on a quarterly basis while challenging other bodies to follow suit.

The medical directors of both facilities warmly welcomed the gesture.

They highlighted the intervention as a crucial morale booster for patients, particularly as hospitals grapple with a surge in malaria cases requiring critical care.

“This is a practical example of what we need more of in these difficult economic times,” said Dr. Muhammad Aji, CMD representative.

For the beneficiaries, including Halima Ibrahim, Amina Muhammad and Abubakar Musa, the support represents much more than just money.

Speaking to blueprint.ng correspondent, they described the contribution as a lifeline, mitigating the harsh reality of medical expenses as the economic climate becomes increasingly harsh.
