YPP elects High Chief Dr. Kemdi Chino Opara as consensus candidate for Imo East Senatorial District

The Young Progressives Party (YPP), Imo State chapter, on Friday, May 29, 2026, successfully conducted the Senatorial Primary Elections for Imo East Senatorial District (Owerri Zone) at the party’s state office along Okigwe Road, Owerri.

During the closely watched exercise, High Chief Kemdi Chino Opara, PhD, KSC, emerged as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Imo East senatorial elections following a unanimous decision by party delegates.

The primary elections, which were held under the supervision of the national leadership of the party represented by the National Publicity Secretary, Wale Martins, saw overwhelming support for Dr. Opara’s candidacy, as all delegates present voted in his favour. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State were also present to monitor the conduct of the primary elections.

Present were several members of the State Executive Committee and leaders of the party, including the State Vice President, Mrs. Monica Iwuchukwu; the Secretary of State, the Hon. Samuel Umunnakwe; state women leader, Nneoma Jane Nwoko; the state youth leader, Hon. Chinemerem Ibekwe; and the State Organizing Secretary, Chief Sabisco Duru, among other stakeholders and party faithful.

Speaking during the exercise, Mr Martins praised the peaceful and transparent conduct of the primaries and pledged the full support of the national leadership of the Young Progressives Party to ensure the success of the party’s candidate during the general elections. He also called upon all the faithful and supporters of the party to remain united and work assiduously for victory at the polls.

In his speech, Imo State Party Chairman, Honorable Micheal Anyanwu, described Dr Opara as a man of proven character and exceptional leadership qualities. He commended the candidate for his selflessness, philanthropy, intelligence and impeccable character, while expressing strong confidence that the YPP will win the Imo East senatorial seat in the next election.

In his acceptance speech, High Chief Dr. Kemdi Chino Opara, PhD, KSC, expressed deep gratitude to the party leadership, delegates and faithful for the trust reposed in him. He assured the party and the people of Owerri Zone that he would not betray the trust placed in him.

Dr Opara also called on members and supporters of the party to take the message of his candidature to every corner of Imo East Senatorial District, stressing the need for unity, dedication and grassroots mobilization ahead of the general elections.

The Young Progressives Party has reaffirmed its commitment to providing focused leadership, transparent representation and people-oriented governance to the people of Imo State and Nigeria at large.
