Zimbabwe introduces archery into school curriculum

Zimbabwe has introduced archery into the primary and secondary school curriculum, in a deliberate move to strengthen the development of the sport from amateur to elite level.

In an interview with Sportxvibe.com.ng, Zimbabwe Archery Association member Queenie Grawticke revealed this and said the association is focused on reviving the sport.

“We are starting to get more young students. It is growing, but slowly. Bringing it to school is reviving hope for success in archery in Zimbabwe because we can get them out there. There has been a perception that archery is for the elite and not for school, but now we have included it in the school curriculum and traditional sports,” he said.

He added that the association is seeking grants to procure equipment for schools and organize capacity building programs for teachers.

“We are trying to get some grants and the first thing is obviously to get people teaching and it will be about teaching the teachers and they will be able to continue teaching and get a group of schools in an area so that one school has the equipment and all the other schools join and go depending on how many times a week because there is no way that anyone can afford to equip all the schools,” he said.
