President Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and 15 other presidential candidates were selected by the Independent on Saturday The National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its final list of presidential candidates and their running mates for the January 2027 general elections.
The list , signed by the Secretary of the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, released on Saturday in Abuja, included candidates sponsored by 18 political parties vying for the position.
President Tinubu is running on the All Progressives Congress, while Abubakar and Obi are running on the platforms of the African Democratic Congress and the Nigeria Democratic Congress respectively.
The gender distribution of the list shows that of the 18 presidential flag bearers, 16 are men, accounting for 88.9%, while two are women.
Male contenders on the list include: Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abubakar Atiku of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Others are: Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Oluseyi Makinde of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Donald Duke of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Chibuzor Okereke of the Labor Party (LP) and Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC).
The only two female presidential candidates, making up 11.1% of the number, are: Okwori Fredrick of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Dr Esther Okereke of the National Redemption Party (NRM).
The gender statistics of vice presidential candidates also show that a total of 14 vice presidential candidates are men, accounting for 77.8%, while only four, accounting for 22.2%, are women.
The vice presidential candidates are: Offordile Egobia (APP), Abubakar Usaku (DLA), Konto Bintu (LP) and Patience Ndidi (YPP).
The commission also published the final list of candidates for the Senate and the House of Representatives.
