US distances itself from killing of Hamas leader

The United States has distanced itself from the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Hamas confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that its leader was killed in a “treacherous Zionist” attack on his residence in Tehran, Iran.

The slain leader was in Iran to attend the inauguration of the country’s new president when he was killed in a suspected Israeli strike.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Channel News Asia (CNA) on Wednesday that his country was not involved in the killing of the Hamas leader.

Blinken, who is visiting Singapore, reiterated the need for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to reduce tensions in the Middle East.

He said the US would continue to work for a ceasefire in the region.
