129 killed in DR Congo prison escape attempt

At least 129 people were killed in an attempted prison break in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday night.

Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani confirmed the incident on his X account on Tuesday.

He said prison authorities shot dead 24 inmates while dozens more were suffocated or trampled to death.

According to the minister, several female prisoners were raped during the chaos at Makala prison in the capital Kinshasa.

He said at least 59 people were also injured in the incident.

The police and military were able to control the situation.

Shabani said the death toll was still preliminary.

“Property damage is quite severe. Administrative buildings, hospitals and food depots were completely burned down,” the minister added.

Security forces held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the case.
