The Borno State government has assured residents in and around Maiduguri that the area will not be submerged by water as efforts are underway to stem seasonal flooding caused by the overflowing Alau Dam.
The Alau Dam, with a capacity of 112 million cubic meters, was designed to support irrigation activities on the banks of the Alau River and to provide tap water in the local government areas of the Maiduguri metropolitan area.
Some areas of Maiduguri and Jere are currently flooded because the Alau dam overflowed into residential areas.
The Secretary to the Borno State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani, who visited on Thursday to assess the Alau Dam and the damage caused by the current overflow, assured residents that the dam is not broken.
The SSG added that the state government is working with the Chad Basin Development Authority to take measures to protect Maiduguriri from flooding.
He said: “There has been a lot of concern and speculation that the entire dam has collapsed, but the dam has not collapsed.”
“We went to Alau Dam on behalf of His Excellency Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Executive Governor of Borno State.
“The Borno State government is working very closely with the Alau dam operators. We have discussed and seen what to do, but there are no rumors that Maiduguri has been flooded,” he assured.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has sent a high-level delegation to assess the impact of the Alau dam overflow, which is threatening the metropolis of Maiduguri and its environs.
Alhaji Bukar Tijani, Secretary to the Borno State Government, led the delegation. They were received by Engr Mohammed Zannah, Acting Director General of the Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) at Alau Dam on Thursday.
The delegation is composed of Engineer Baba Bukar Gujibawu, SA to the Governor for Monitoring and Evaluation, Engineer Adam Bababe, Executive Secretary of Borno Geographic Information Service, Engineer Sadu Auno, Executive Secretary of Borno State Road Maintenance Agency and the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Mohammed Saidu Barkindo.
During the briefing with the SSG, Zannah said that despite the high water level in the river that caused the flooding, the current conditions do not pose a serious threat to the city, stressing that all necessary measures have been put in place to control the situation.
