Nigeria’s senior national team started their AFCON 2025 qualifiers on the right foot with a 3-0 win over Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

After suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the same rival in their last match, which was the World Cup qualifier three months ago, the Super Eagles had to wait until the final minutes of the first half to take the lead.

Ademola Lookman ensured the Super Eagles went into the break with the lead when he pounced on a loose ball and showed remarkable composure to keep his markers at bay before scoring.

Substitute Victor Osimhen ensured the visitors would never turn back when he headed home a low ball from Wilfred Ndidi to seal the match. He came close to scoring a third but with the goalkeeper at his mercy he failed to find his feet.

Lookman scored his second when substitute Moses Simon found him with a well-weighted ball to complete a 3-0 thrashing of the team managed by former Nigerian team coach Gernot Rohr.

The Super Eagles will depart for Kigali tomorrow for their second match of the series against Rwanda, buoyed by their first competitive win since losing the AFCON final 1-2 to Ivory Coast in February.
