Meta can attract Facebook, Instagram out of Nigeria

Meta Mark Zuckerberg is considering plans to stop the operation of two social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, in Nigeria if the ongoing dispute with the regulating body remains restless.

Remember last week that the Federal Nigerian competition and the Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) fined the Meta platform which included $ 220 million, which was upheld by the competition and the Consumer Protection Court. This is a significant victory for the country’s efforts to maintain consumer rights.

In a statement released last Friday, the Director of FCCPC Corporate affairs Ondaje Ijagwu announced a court decision, saying that strengthened the strength of the commission under Nigeria’s law and his respect for the legal process. FCCPC was also given an additional $ 35,000 by the court to pay the investigation fees.

Appeal by Meta and WhatsApp who fought for the foundation of law, methods, and conclusions of the commission investigation of their business practices were rejected by the panel of three members led by Hon. Thomas Okosun.

In addition, Meta was fined ₦ 60 billion (around $ 37.5 million) by the Nigerian Advertising Council (Arcon), and an additional $ 32.8 million added by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC). The total fine currently faced by Meta reached nearly $ 290.3 million.

According to Meta, demands hinder their ability to do business in Nigeria. According to Meta documents, “the applicant (Meta) may be forced to effectively close Facebook and Instagram services in Nigeria,” quoting the possibility of law enforcement measures for non-compliance.
