Elombi Cameroon was elected as the new Afreximbank president

Shareholders on Saturday chose Dr. George Elombi as President and Chair of the new Board of Directors of the African Export-import bank (Afreximbank).

Elombi is the fourth president of the bank since it was founded in 1993.

The appointment was one of the main decisions taken at the 32th annual meeting of the Afreximbank Group and related events held in Abuja from 25 to 28 June.

He replaced Prof. Benedict Oramah, who has served as President and Chair of the Afreximbank Board of Directors since 2015.

Olam will resign in September.

Elombi was a Cameroon and joined Afreximbank in 1996 as a legal officer.

He was promoted to the Vice President of the Executive, Governance, Law and Services of the Company.

For nearly three decades in the bank, he has served as Director and Executive Secretary (2010-2015); Deputy Director, Legal Services / Executive Secretary (2008-2010); Chief Legal Officer (2003-2008); and senior law officials (2001-2003).

Before joining Afreximbank, he taught the law at the University of Hull, England.

Elombi plays an important role in building the structure of the Afreximbank Group, including the formation of a major subsidiary that has expanded the capacity of the bank to meet its mandate.

In his reception speech, Cameroon stated a deep commitment to the bank’s mission and future.

He said: “I have worked with extraordinary colleagues and extraordinary leaders to help form the vision of this institution, his mandate, and growth.

“When we look into the future, I see Afreximbank as a force for the industrialization of Africa and to regain the dignity of Africans wherever they are.

“I will work to preserve this important asset.”
