This, he said it is a way to promote national unity, discipline, resilience in the face of growing security and social challenges.
Ihejirika made the call on Friday evening on the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) regular course 18 Alumni Association in Abuja.
He reflected on his first days in military service and the camaraderie built over the years with other officers.
The former army head said that discipline and patriotism instilled into them during training was fundamental to model their career and national contributions.
โGiven the current situation of things in our country, I think it is time to start thinking about the mandatory military training for our citizens.
“We can start with the National Youth Service. This will help us build a generation of Nigerians who include sacrifice, responsibility and patriotism,” he said.
Ihejirika praised the government’s decision to restore the old national anthem, saying that it strengthens the spirit of unity.
He stressed that the line “although the tribe and language can differ, in the brotherhood that we find” perfectly captures the essence of the national service and shared identity.
He also expressed concern about the way the national anthem is now reduced to simple fanfare during official events.
“It should be a daily reminder of our oath of fidelity. He must return to schools, communities and national ceremonies,” he said.
Drawing from his life experience, Ihejirika told his humble beginnings from his village in Abia and how military discipline transformed him.
He attributed the support of colleagues and mentors for his successful career, which culminated in his appointment at the 22nd head of the Nigeria Army staff.
In addition to his defense, the retired general also praised the current leadership of the Nigerian armed forces, describing them as very experienced and well trained.
โMany of the officers who guide today have served in Liberia, Sierra Leone and other conflict areas.
They gained their stars through a real battle experience and are going very well, “he added.
He urged the Nigerian leaders at all levels to give priority to peace and stability, reminding them that no charge or position is sustainable in the absence of national unity.
