Youth Games: FCT, Plateau, Niger, Kogi, Kwara Play for Zonal Shock in Ilorin

More than 1,200 athletes and officials from the entire northern central region are converging in Illorin for the zonal elimination of team sports before the 9th National Youth Sports Festival (NysF) scheduled for Delta State later in the year.

The zonal event, originally invoiced by the state of Nasarawa, was saved at the last minute by Kwara’s state after Nasarawa did not comply with accommodation obligations.

The governor of Kwara, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, ordered the State to sign the costs to ensure that the competition is maintained without interruptions.

The zonal coordinator, Saka Akeem, praised the rapid intervention, describing Kwara’s preparation as a “life line” for the festival.

“We are immensely grateful to Governor Abdulrazaq for saving the day.

“Our impression until now since the arrival has been very positive,” he said.

Nine sports disciplines will be played in Ilorin, with only two teams in each sport that advance to the NysF finals in Delta.

Sports include Abula, Cricket, Handball, beach volleyball, baseball/softball, basketball, volleyball, football, rugby and hockey.

Although the participation of the state of Benue remains uncertain, Nasarawa, the territory of the Federal Capital (FCT), Plateau, Kogi, Niger and the Kwara hosts have confirmed the preparation to appear in the elimination. The projection of athletes, strictly limited to 15 years or less, began on Saturday with scheduled matches to run until Monday.

Kwara’s sports director in the State Sports Commission, coach Ibrahim Bako, said the State is fully prepared despite the late notice.

“Kwara is always ready. That is why we are still the leading sports state in the north center and among the five main ones throughout the country in the NysF,” he said.

Beyond competition, eliminations are considered a platform for youth empowerment, talents discovery and base sports development in the region.

By offering exposure to young athletes to national competitions, the event is expected to increase confidence, discipline and professional paths for many teenagers.

Sports analysts say that the festival has become a vital talent pipe, especially for states in the north central zone, where the opportunities limited the opportunities.

Accommodation responsibilities also provide economic and social benefits, since local hotels, transport operators and small businesses in Illorin are already registering an increase in sponsorship.

For states such as Plateau, Niger and Kogi, the event offers young athletes the opportunity to measure themselves against their peers in structured competition, helping states to refine the base programs.

Meanwhile, the participation of FCT continues its tradition of promoting young talent, many of which finally graduate in national teams.

The National Youth Sports Festival remains the largest road in Nigeria to dig up future stars in football, basketball, athletics and other sports.

Many previous participants have represented Nigeria internationally, reinforcing the meaning of competition on the country’s sports development agenda.
