Former Vice President and 2023 Presidential candidates from the Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, have expressed concern over what he described as “coordinated and dangerous attacks on different voices” in Nigeria.
Atiku’s statement followed the recent incident, including the police call former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and the leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the attack on former Attorney General Abubakar Night, and the disruption of security meetings organized by the Elders Katsina Forum.
In a statement released through its official X grip on Friday, Atiku said the development refers to “disturbing trends of authoritarianism” under the government of President Tinubu.
“The call of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and ADC leaders in Kaduna, bold attacks on former Attorney General Abubakar Malam, and violent disorders from the Placsency Forum that were read, and highly touched readings, they indicate very coordinated and non-existing plots.
Former Vice President emphasized that democracy cannot develop without differences of opinion, warning that the criminalization of opposition and the use of security institutions against criticism that is felt can encourage Nigeria towards authoritarian government.

“Without hesitation, Nigeria is almost dangerous to sneak into authoritarian government if the pattern of oppression continues. We are unable to return to the era marked by fear, silence, and impunity,” he warned.
Atiku asked Nigeria to cross the political line and citizenship to maintain democratic principles, insisting that protecting freedom, justice, and the rule of law is the collective responsibility.
“Power is temporary, but history will strongly judge those who use it against people instead of their service. Nigeria belongs to us all, not only the ruling party or any individual,” he added.
His comments came in the midst of increasing concerns over the alleged efforts of security agents to suppress opposition activities in several parts of Northern Nigeria. Earlier this week, El-Rufai accused the police of blocking ADC meetings in Kaduna even though there was a constitutional guarantee of freedom of association.
