The Minister of Nigeria for health and social well -being, dr. Iziak Adekunle Salako, asked for a collective action to deal with persistent interruptions in the supply of public health services and guaranteeing fair access to health care for all Nigerians.
Speaking at a conference on public health hosted by Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Dr. Salako underlined the urgent need for innovation and resilience in facing the challenges that have to face health systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
Providing his key speech entitled “to fill the interruption of the delivery of the service in public health: a critical imperative for our future”, the minister warned that the interruptions of the health service were not simple statistics but involved disastrous consequences for families and communities.
“While we refuse to be defined by these challenges, we must face the problems at hand and commit ourselves to proactive solutions.
“This conference symbolizes our collective determination to learn from past lessons, innovate in adversity and build a public health system prepared for future crises,” he said.
Dr. Salako has identified work strikes, endemic diseases and pandemic outbreaks as important threats to the delivery of health care, noting that they exaggerated medical workers, interrupt essential services and weaken social structures.
He recalled how the Covid-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of the Nigeria health system, citing the infection from workers at the forefront, the lack of protective equipment, the breakdown of the drug supply chain and the closure of primary health centers such as some of the low points.
Despite these setbacks, he said that the pandemic was also a catalyst for innovation, stimulating reforms that could strengthen future health response systems.
Among the proposed strategies were the creation of mobile diagnostic units at the community level, control centers of specialized diseases and home delivery of drugs for patients with chronic diseases.
He also highlighted the investment initiative of renewal of the Nigerian health sector, describing it as a long -term measure aimed at building sustainability and preventing future interruptions of the delivery of health care.
“The future of Nigeria’s public health is sure, but requires United effort. I ask everyone to unite the hands while we travel to save human lives, reduce physical and financial pain and promote health for all Nigerians,” he added.
The president and deputy chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Ademola Tayo, praised the Minister for his support and urged the participants to maximize the knowledge and intuitions acquired by the Conference to guide significant reforms in the sector.
